Story: A man returns to Herzegovina to reclaim his ancestral home following the fall of Communism, and finds his life spinning into a frenzy following the loss of his lucky cat in director Danis Tanovic's adroit political drama. The year is 1991. Divko Buntic has spent the past 20 years in Germany, living a life of luxury. His mint Mercedes is noticeably out of place when he arrives back in Herzegovina with Azra, his gorgeous young girlfriend and Bonny, his lucky cat, and after using his clout to have his estranged wife Lucija thrown out onto the street, Divko attempts to make amends Martin, his 20 year old son. But everything starts to fall apart when Bonny vanishes without a trace, and the townspeople race to find the feline, and collect a handsome reward. Meanwhile, trouble begins brewing as Divko and Azra drift apart, and the younger girl finds herself increasingly drawn to Martin. Amidst all of the drama, practically no one in town notices when Croatia secedes, and Serbian bombs start falling on Dubrovnik.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1991. The communists have fallen from power and Divko Buntic returns to the small town where he grew up to reclaim his family home. After a 20-year exile in Germany, Divko arrives in his flashy red Mercedes with sexy young girlfriend Azra, lucky black cat Bonny and a pocketful of Deutschmarks. Divko uses his money and connections to forcefully evict estranged wife Lucija, but he tries to reunite with 20-year-old son Martin. When Divko's beloved cat Bonny disappears, the whole town joins in a frantic search to get the cash reward. The daily hunt for the missing cat strains Divko's fragile relationship with Azra and opens up an unexpected but strong attraction between Azra and Martin. Busy fretting over everyday concerns, most of the townsfolk seem to disregard the rumbling political unrest: Croatia has seceded, all Yugoslavs are being forced to take sides, and the Serbs begin bombing Dubrovnik. Although their area is on high alert, many still can't imagine anyone or anything could divide Bosnia and Herzegovina ...

Movie: Michael

Release Date: February 15, 2012 (limited)

Studio: Strand Releasing

Director: Markus Schleinzer

Screenwriter: Markus Schleinzer

Starring: Michael Fuith, David Rauchenberger

Genre: Drama

IMDB Rating: 7.5

Story: Critics have described the Austrian thriller Michael as "unnerving" and "alarming," but these adjectives fail to properly capture the intense dread that lingers after watching the film's haunting trailer. Viewable below, it is disturbing on a level that may surprise you, considering there's no violence, gore or sex revealed. Instead, what's offered is a terrifying window into evil accompanied by a sickeningly jarring soundtrack from a broken jack-in-the-box.

Michael centers on the secret life of a seemingly shy insurance salesman. Unbeknownst to the world outside his small soundproofed home, Michael (Michael Fuith) has a 10-year-old boy named Wolfgang (David Rauchenberger) trapped in his basement. This troubling feature exposes the five-month span the pair spends together.

If you've watched as much Investigation Discovery as I have, you knew with a sickening certainty where this trailer was headed as soon as you spotted the soundproofed door. Michael's writer-director Markus Schleinzer admits his inspiration for the troubling tale sprang from the shocking true story of an Austrian man who kept his own daughter locked away in his basement, where he raped her for more than 24 years, eventually fathering three children, who he also locked away. This perturbing narrative marks the directorial debut of Schleinzer, a casting director who has helped cull the talent for such acclaimed and unnerving features as The White Ribbon, The Piano Teacher, and The Counterfeiters.

Michael has already drawn notice abroad at such illustrious venues as the Cannes Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. And now Strand Releasing will bring this haunting drama to theaters Stateside on February 15th.

Movie: Bullhead

Release Date: February 17, 2012 (limited)

Studio: Drafthouse Films

Director: Michael R. Roskam

Screenwriter: Michael R. Roskam

Starring: Matthias Schoenaerts, Jeroen Perceval, Barbara Sarafian, Jeanne Dandoy, Tibo Vandenborre

Genre: Drama, Thriller

Official Website: DrafthouseFilms.com

IMDB Rating: 7.5

Story: We here at VeryAware are always ones for niche market films. That said, we are eagerly awaiting the release of Michael R. Roskam’s BULLHEAD. Unfortunately we missed the boat on it not once (at Fantastic Fest), but twice (at AFI Fest)! But that ends now, dear readers. While y’all fervently anticipate our full review, check out the trailer below for the Belgium’s nominee at this year’s Oscars for Best Foreign Film.

Perhaps the year’s most stunning international debut, BULLHEAD is a harrowing tale of revenge, redemption and fate. Domineering cattle farmer Jacky Vanmarsenille (Matthias Schoenaerts in a ferocious breakout performance), constantly pumped on steroids and hormones, initiates a shady deal with a notorious mafioso meat trader. When an investigating federal agent is assassinated and a woman from his traumatic past resurfaces, Jacky must confront his demons and face the far-reaching consequences of his decisions.

While many of you are rushing out to check out the 2012 Oscar Nominated Best Pictures, one that you should make time in the Best Foreign Film category is ‘Bullhead‘ which puts some of the American picks to shame.

Drafthouse Films picked up ‘Bullhead‘, a real gem of a crime thriller, so it will only be going into select cities since it picked up an Academy Award nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. If you live in a reasonable distance, go check out this film. It quite the intense thrill ride and deserves to be in more theaters than just ‘select’ ones.

I found it odd that the Weinstein Company or Paramount Vantage didn’t grab this up since it could easily find an audience, but I think it should find a good one when it hits dvd/blu-ray. If you saw ‘A Prophent’ then this will be right up your alley, plus it’s even more intense than that one. Below are the first international trailer for ‘Bullhead’ aka ‘Rundskop’ along with the US trailer that just hits, and plenty of posters and images of the film to get your interest up.

For some reason Matthias Schoenaerts reminds me of Tom Hardy in this very physical role and how he’s infused himself so much with the character. If you’ve seen Hardy in ‘Bronson‘ you’ll get what I mean.

Perhaps the year’s most stunning international debut, Michael R. Roskam’s BULLHEAD is a harrowing tale of revenge, redemption and fate. Domineering cattle farmer Jacky Vanmarsenille (Mattias Schoenaerts in a ferocious breakout performance), constantly pumped on steroids and hormones, initiates a shady deal with a notorious mafioso meat trader. When an investigating federal agent is assassinated and a woman from his traumatic past resurfaces, Jacky must confront his demons and face the far-reaching consequences of his decisions. Acclaimed at festivals worldwide including the Berlin Film Festival, AFI Fest and Fantastic Fest, the award-winning BULLHEAD is visceral thriller bursting with rage.

Movie: On the Ice

Release Date: February 17, 2012 (limited)

Studio: On the Ice, LLC, PMK*BNC Films

Director: Andrew Okpeaha MacLean

Screenwriter: Andrew Okpeaha MacLean

Starring: Josiah Patkotak, Frank Qutuq Irelan, Teddy Kyle Smith, Adamina Kerr, John Miller, Rosabelle Kunnanna Rexford, Sierra Jade Sampson

Genre: Drama, Suspense

Official Website: OntheIcethemovie.com

IMDB Rating: 6.9

Story: I was lucky enough to attend a screening of On The Ice at the Sundance Film Festival last night, followed by a Q&A with the director and crew. For those of you interested in Independent Movies, or good movies in general, On The Ice is definitely one put on your list.

On The Ice is a thriller based in the small Alaskan town of Barrow. It was adapted by Andrew Okpeaha MacLean from a short (Sikumi) that premiered at Sundance a few years ago.

The beginning of the film serves to introduce the incredibly unique northern Alaskan culture; Barrow is like an island of ice, snowmobiles, and the rapidly evolving Iñupiaq culture. Residents travel between their modest houses on snowmobiles, and the teenagers perform in a native dance exhibition before heading to a rap party. This fascinating juxtaposition of history, western culture, and environmental demands create a movie worth watching; but then the actors draw you in.

All of the actors in the film literally had no previous acting experience, which is absolutely astounding considering the magnitude of their performance. The main characters Qalli (Josiah Patkotak) and Aivaaq (Frank Qutuq Irelan), are two friends in the transition period between high school and what comes after high school. For Qalli it’s college, far away from Barrow. and for Aivaaq it’s being a father to his recently conceived child. One morning while hunting, a drug-influenced fight ends with a third boy (John Miller) accidentally being killed. Qalli and Aivaaq, horrified and worried about their future, make a rash decision; a decision which brings chaos and heartache to the secluded town.

With a well-written story, a powerful score, and beautiful cinematography, On The Ice is exactly what you hope a Sundance movie to be. It is a thought-provoking look at self-preservation and friendship, all set against a back-drop never before showcased in a film. If you have the chance to see it before Sundance is over, make sure you do. If not, keep your eyes out, because it’s likelihood of distribution is high.

Release Date: February 17, 2012 (limited)

Studio: ATO Pictures

Director: Karen Sprecher

Screenwriter: Jill Sprecher, Karen Sprecher

Starring: Greg Kinnear, Alan Arkin, Billy Crudup, Lea Thompson, David Harbour, Bob Balaban

Genre: Thriller

IMDB Rating: 6.7

Story: This week was the final movie class of the Fall Semester and we saw the drama “Thin Ice” (AKA “The Convincer”) starring Greg Kinnear, Alan Arkin, Billy Crudup, Lea Thompson and Bob Balaban.

When an insurance salesman tries to scam an old man, he inadvertently gets involved in a murder – but will he be able to get away with both crimes?

Mickey Prohaska (Kinnear) is one of the sleaziest and most dishonest insurance salesmen you have ever had the displeasure to meet; either despite or as a direct result of his duplicitous behavior, his Wisconsin-based insurance business is suffering – and the fact that he’s incurring additional expenses due to the recent separation from his wife Jo Ann (Thompson) doesn’t help financial matters either. So, when an opportunity arises to write an unnecessarily expensive insurance policy for Gorvy (Arkin), an eccentric elderly man who lives with his beloved dog, Mickey grabs it tightly with both hands refusing to let go.

In the course of working on the policy, Mickey learns that Gorvy owns an expensive antique violin, valued at around $25,000 by a professional appraiser (Balaban). Recognizing that the doddering old man is barely aware he even owns the musical instrument, Mickey sees this as a chance to cash in by selling the violin himself and pocketing the money. Devising a plan to replace the actual violin with a fake, Mickey tries to gain entry to Gorvy’s place but can’t due to a recently-installed security system for which he doesn’t know the code. Randy (Crudup), the belligerent locksmith who originally installed the system, is convinced by Mickey to grant him access to the house. Once there, Randy discovers Mickey’s true intent and immediately wants in on the scheme in exchange for not reporting Mickey to the police. Reluctantly, Mickey agrees – but when Randy kills a nosy neighbor snooping around Gorvy’s house at the time, the crime now escalates to something beyond what either of them had originally anticipated.

Quickly disposing of the body, the two men now turn their attention to rapidly selling the instrument so that they can acquire the money and finally be done with each other once and for all. Complications develop, however, when the police begin to investigate Gorvy’s missing neighbor. Getting increasingly nervous, Randy threatens to provide evidence to the police of Mickey’s plot about the insurance scam and complicity in the murder when he finds out that Mickey is somewhat cooperating with their investigation. But when the pair ultimately determine that they have found a buyer for the antique, can they get their payday before the cops get wise?

Given all of the plot contrivances piling up one after another throughout this movie, I have to admit that I really had quite a good deal of trouble with this script and as a result, can’t recommend “Thin Ice” very strongly when it opens next month -- if indeed it does (more about that later). Despite the fact that it has an excellent cast and the movie played at the Sundance Film Festival, this story has so many problems with it that at some point, I found it difficult to suspend my disbelief due to the number of dramatic conceits that occurred. One bright spot about this movie was Billy Crudup’s performance as the security system installer – he was simultaneously funny and frightening.

Another problem with the movie is that the story can tend to be a little confusing, what with all of the twists and double-crosses. One thing our instructor mentioned – and I have to admit that I must agree with him on this point -- was that “Thin Ice” was particularly confusing when the filmmakers try to explain how the story is resolved at the end of the movie; too much information is crammed down the viewer’s throat too quickly and the net result is that very little (if any of it) can be processed.

You may find it something of a challenge in the event you want to see this movie. For one thing, the title may change. We saw this movie under the title of “Thin Ice”, but our instructor told us that up until about three weeks ago, it was known as “The Convincer”. If you do a little research on this movie, you may find information about it under either title. Another reason you may find “Thin Ice”/”The Convincer” challenging is because it has a history of being wrapped up in so many lawsuits, there’s a strong possibility that it may never even get released at the end of January as is currently scheduled. Good luck!

Prior to the screening, actress Jill Hennessy was interviewed. You might know Hennessy from such television series as “Law & Order” and “Crossing Jordan”. While she didn’t have any association to the film we saw this night, she was there to discuss her experience on the film “Roadie” (which we saw in our movie class a couple of weeks ago) and also to promote the fact that she is performing as a singer/guitarist at various clubs here in New York City. Originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Hennessy’s family eventually moved to Toronto, where she took up with street performers as a singer during her teenage years. As a result of hanging out with the musicians, she was eventually able to teach herself how to play the guitar. At the end of the interview, she performed one of her own compositions, which appeared in the film “Roadie”.

Movie: The Secret World of Arrietty

Release Date: February 17, 2012

Studio: Walt Disney Pictures

Director: Hiromasa Yonebayashi (English Version: Gary Rydstrom)

Screenwriter: Hayao Miyazaki, Keiko Niwa (English Version: Karey Kirkpatrick)

Starring: Bridgit Mendler, Amy Poehler, Carol Burnett, Will Arnett, David Henrie, Moises Arias

Genre: Adventure, Animation

Official Website: Disney.com/Arrietty

IMDB Rating: 7.7

Story: Walt Disney Pictures has released the first trailer and poster for The Secret World of Arrietty, an animated adventure developed by Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Ponyo) and is based on Mary Norton’s acclaimed children’s book series The Borrowers.

The film is directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi and featuring a voice cast for the English-language version including Bridgit Mendler, Amy Poehler, Carol Burnett, Will Arnett, David Henrie and Moises Arias.

In the film, Arrietty (Bridgit Mendler), a tiny, but tenacious 14-year-old, lives with her parents (Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) in the recesses of a suburban garden home, unbeknownst to the homeowner and her housekeeper (Carol Burnett). Like all little people, Arrietty (AIR-ee-ett-ee) remains hidden from view, except during occasional covert ventures beyond the floorboards to “borrow” scrap supplies like sugar cubes from her human hosts. But when 12-year-old Shawn (David Henrie), a human boy who comes to stay in the home, discovers his mysterious housemate one evening, a secret friendship blossoms. If discovered, their relationship could drive Arrietty’s family from the home and straight into danger.

Disney is finally bringing us the official English Dub of Miyazaki’s “The Secret World of Arrietty.” The new trailer launched Tuesday on Youtube and iTunes, and sets the North American release date at February 17th, 2012.

“The Secret World of Arrietty” is Miyazaki’s faithful adaptation of the classic book “The Borrowers,” a 1952 children’s novel by Mary Norton. It follows the adventures of the Clock family, who believe they are the last of their kind and must live in a world surrounded by giants. Dangers and the unknown are ever present, and make for a fantastic tale!

Not only is Miyazaki’s adaptation much closer than that of the prior Borrower’s film and miniseries – it also breathes that very special magic and whimsy that so many Studio Ghibli films possess.

Starring Will Arnett, Luke Allen-Gale, Carol Burnett, Amy Poehler, and Saoirse Ronan – this film is definitely another must-see from Miyazaki and his talented crew. I have always been extremely impressed with Disney’s English dub-work, and they have done a fantastic job marketing and distributing Studio Ghibli’s films in the U.S. – “The Secret World of Arrietty” is sure to be another hit.

Story: High school football film Undefeated (pictured), New York Times-set doc Page One and chimpanzee story Project Nim are among the nominees for the best documentary prize at the Broadcast Film Critics Association’s 17th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.

The docs are competing in a category of six nominees, with the other contenders being Martin Scorsese’s George Harrison: Living in the Material World, Werner Herzog’s Cave of Forgotten Dreams and Cindy Meehl’s Buck.

The winner will be named at the Critics Choice Awards ceremony at the Hollywood Palladium in LA on January 12, 2012. Last year’s doc winner was Davis Guggenheim’s Waiting for “Superman.”

Superbowl XLVI has gone and Pats passed. But before you put football to the back burner until next season, a new documentary about a high school football team is ready to keep you in the football spirit.

With an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature already under its belt, Undefeated, which opens in theaters Feburary 17th, is sure to leave audiences captivated and inspired.

Set against the backdrop of a high school football season, Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin’s documentary UNDEFEATED is an intimate chronicle of three underprivileged student-athletes from inner-city Memphis and the volunteer coach trying to help them beat the odds on and off the field.

Founded in 1899, Manassas High School in North Memphis has never seen its football team, the Tigers, win a playoff game. In recent decades, the last-place Tigers had gone so far as to sell its regular season games to rival schools looking to chalk up an easy win.

That began to change in 2004, when Bill Courtney, former high school football coach turned businessman, volunteered to lend a hand. When Courtney arrived, the Tigers were accustomed to timeworn equipment and a sorry patch of lawn as a practice field. Focusing on nurturing emotional as well as physical strength, Courtney has helped the Tigers find their footing and their confidence.

The 2009 Summer/Fall football season promises to be the Tigers’ best ever — perhaps the season that finally breaks the 110 year-old playoff jinx. It’s the senior year for the team’s star player, O.C., a left tackle blessed with power, size and speed. With football scholarships hanging in the balance, O.C. will have to juggle practice with the study sessions he needs to pass crucial exams. Also playing his last season is undersized offensive lineman Montrail – known to all as “Money” — an earnest honors student hoping to score an academic scholarship. For Chavis, a talented linebacker in his junior year, the challenge of 2009 lies in keeping his explosive temper in check — something the willful teenager isn’t always interested in doing.

For players and coaches alike, the season will be not only about winning games — it will be about how they grapple with the unforeseeable events that are part of football and part of life.

Screenwriter: Timothy Dowling, Simon Kinberg

Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Chelsea Handler, Til Schweiger, Abigail Spencer

Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy

Official Website: ThisMeansWarmovie.com

IMDB Rating: N/A

Story: We’ve been provided with six clips from the upcoming action-comedy This Means War to share with our readers. Directed by McG, the film stars Chris Pine and Tom Hardy as two CIA operatives who realize they’re dating the same girl (Reese Witherspoon). Rather than giving up and allowing one of the two to continue seeing Witherspoon, Hardy and Pine put their CIA gadgetry and know-how to work in order to derail each another’s relationship with the girl.

Hit the jump to check out the clips and look for interviews with the cast and McG soon. This Means War opens February 14th.

The world’s deadliest CIA operatives are inseparable partners and best friends until they fall for the same woman. Having once helped bring down entire enemy nations, they are now employing their incomparable skills and an endless array of high-tech gadgetry against their greatest nemesis ever – each other.

Why Tom Hardy, WHY?!? Well, as my buddy Dylan explained to me, Hardy has just done three serious films, and he needed to do fast, easy, for the money comedy. Like, Natalie Portman coming off “Black Swan” with “No Strings Attached” to follow. I’m not a Reese Witherspoon fan to begin with so I already knew I wouldn’t enjoy much of the film while she’s present on screen. As for Chris Pine…well, I can’t get the Captain Kirk mindset off.

Two top CIA operatives, FDR Foster (Chris Pine) & Tuck (Tom Hardy) wage an epic battle against one another after they discover they are dating the same woman (Reese Witherspoon), Lauren. After several dates, and some heavy spy work between both parties, Lauren is caught in the middle of a major dilemma, who’s the perfect guy for her? Meanwhile, there’s a subplot involving a really angry German bad guy named Heinrich (Til Schweiger), who’s after FDR & Tuck for killing Henrich’s brother.

Guys want an action movie and the ladies want the romantic comedy, honestly I think both groups are going to be seriously disappointed. The action sequences are lame at the very best, and the romantic shit is so by the book it becomes tiresome. The movie steals certain little things from every movie you can think of, including “Goodfellas”! Can you believe that?!? “Goodfellas”! It’s the scene where FDR & Lauren go on their first date, personally I think only a real movie buff would notice this, but if you’ve seen “Goodfellas” it’s really not hard to miss.

Now the movies story overall sucks, you know exactly how it’s gonna end from the beginning of the film, all that’s left is to sit through an hour and a half of the inevitable. It’s a McG film, can you expect any less? This is the man behind the “Charlie’s Angels” movies. But, are the actors funny? Reese, I could care less, she is all kinds of annoying here. Chris Pine has his moments, but all I saw in him was his Captain Kirk character in J.J. Abram’s “Star Trek” (P.S. can’t freakin’ wait for “2”). Now, Tom Hardy & co-star Chelsea Handler seem to be having the most fun here. Hardy is breaking out into American audience quite quickly, “The Dark Knight Rises” will certainly put the official staple on all things Tom, but I can’t help but feel bad that he had to do a crappy rom-com-action flick like this. Chelsea, she’s funny, she’s not my cup of tea on TV, but I’ll give her credit, she’s FUNNY in this movie.

It’s quite sad to see that the supporting players, even some of the minimal background characters of the film, are getting WAY more laughs than what the lead cast is throwing at us. And wait a sec, was that Angela Bassett in a point less and highly underused supporting role? I think that was! I could go off for hours on why I think you people should skip this film, but I know that people disregard what critics have to say, so, whatever see, don’t see it, I could give a rats ass. All I know is this, I saw the movie early & FREE at a press screening, that’s fine by me.

Movie: Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

Release Date: February 17, 2012 (3D/2D theaters)

Studio: Columbia Pictures (Sony)

Director: Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor

Screenwriter: Scott M. Gimple, Seth Hoffman, David S. Goyer

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Fergus Riordan, Ciaran Hinds, Violante Placido, Idris Elba, Johnny Whitworth

Genre: Action, Adventure

Official Website: TheSpiritofVengeance.com

IMDB Rating: 6.0

Story: The filmmaking team behind “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” are hoping for a redemption story both on and off the screen.

Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the writing and directing tandem behind “Crank” and “Gamer,” have inherited the fiery Columbia Pictures franchise and their first challenges may be getting fans to forgive and forget the 2007 movie “Ghost Rider.” The pair came to New York Comic-Con to show footage to fans and assure them that, this time around, the fire-and-brimstone anti-hero will be presented in a dark tale that lives up to the tone and legacy in the pages of Marvel Comics.

This will be a “darker, nastier, meaner” version of Johnny Blaze, a fellow who will not be throwing on tights and saving cats. “He will light the cat on fire though,” Neveldine said. “And that’s important.”

Taylor cited the comics work of Garth Ennis and said that he and his partner had read a tall stack of Ghost Rider comics in preparation. The team decided to make a fashion statement by going for “something more visceral” in the look of the character, who will be losing that jacket from the first movie because it was “too 80s.”

Nicolas Cage returns as the title character in the Valentine’s Day 2012 release but the footage shown (which the directors also showed over the summer at Comic-Con International in San Diego) backed up the frequent promises that the hellfire franchise has a new lease on life, at least as far as tone.

“It will be more like a horror film than an episode of ‘Cops,’ ” Neveldine said.

This is not the first time the tandem have tried to make a film with an offbeat comics anti-hero created in the early 1970s; they wrote the script for “Jonah Hex” and were on track at one point to direct the film — though they’re probably glad they didn’t since the Warner Bros. release ended up as one of the most jeered films in memory.

The lively panel underlined how much the filmmakers enjoy their reputation for risk-taking stunt work and high-adrenaline antics. Neveldine said he set a decree that if anyone broke a bone on set, it would go into the movie. He added: “We crashed a lot of cars, busted a lot of gasoline cans, and broke a lot of bones.”

Story: A trailer for the drama Return has gone online. The film stars Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks) as a returned soldier struggling to fit back into the life she left behind. It’s a familiar story that’s been told quite a few times before, but Return tells it from a female’s point of view. It’s hard to judge the movie based on the trailer as its success will likely hinge on the performances, but Cardellini looks to be doing some solid work here. We don’t see much of co-stars Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire) and John Slattery (Mad Men), but the trailer’s more a mood piece than a full-on plot explanation.

But she gradually realizes that the life she left behind is no longer there waiting for her. Depicting Kelli’s struggle to find her place in a life she no longer recognizes, Linda Cardellini delivers a tour de force performance, leading an all-star cast that also includes John Slattery (Mad Men). Movie: Chico & Rita

Release Date: February 10, 2012 (NY)

Studio: Luma Films (GKIDS)

Director: Fernando Trueba, Tono Errando, Javier Mariscal

Screenwriter: Ignacio Martínez de Pisón, Fernando Trueba

Starring: Mario Guerra, Limara Meneses, Eman Xor Oña

Genre: Animation

Official Website: ChicoandRita.com

IMDB Rating: 7.1

Story: Chico and Rita is a Spanish animated movie, focusing on two deeply flawed, yet loveable, people and their chaotic relationship over a fifty-year period. Set in Havana, the film takes on the backdrop of the ‘40s jazz scene. Moving from Cuba to New York, via Las Vegas, Hollywood and Paris, Chico and Rita is an epic tale of love and heartbreak.

The animation style is tantamount to unique, and I cannot think of any worthwhile comparisons. The colours are vibrant and the drawings often intentionally crude (especially the backgrounds), but there is a strong element of realism to it. Where the visuals shine are the distant shots of cityscapes, along with the incidental shots during transition scenes. There are a fantastic spectacle and are genuinely impressive, there can be no doubting the vast amount of hours that went into this project. The animated lighting also looks great, and at times it is a pure feast for the eyes. While it would be nice for that to be a blanket statement, unfortunately it is not; the style isn’t as effective during close-ups, with the lack of small details pertaining the characters to display an absence of emotion. The colour palette is excellent, and the technique utilised puts this in the foreground. Hence there is also an element of style over realism, an observation rather than a criticism.

The whole film is extremely stylish from start to finish, and this is embodied by the music. The soundwork of the piece is probably its most important aspect, and that is not exclusively considering the jazz score, which is absolutely wonderful. The incidental sound is expertly done; from the waves lapping on the rocks outside a Cuban apartment to the hustling streets of New York, it contributes to making the experience far more engrossing.

The characters of the piece are thoroughly convincing, and it is a nice touch to include animated visions of many famous jazz musicians. The voice-work that drives them is perfect, with no week links amongst the cast. While the plot is relatively engaging, it never quite moves at a steady pace; sometimes it seems a little jumpy and overly quick, other times it can be a little dull. This is largely down to some sloppy editing, and they could’ve improved the film by a good margin if more care had been put into that particular stage of development.

Chico and Rita is a very good film, but it’s not quite a great one. Yes, the animation is at times striking, but I’m not sure it’s apt for an entire feature. The plot is compelling, but the ending, which I’m sure is supposed to be a happy one, feels more sad than intended. The film never quite strikes a good balance between realism and fantasy, usually jumping from one to the other in different scenes. However, there is more than enough here to make Chico and Rita a worthwhile cinema experience. The character’s flaws make them seem more human, the music is brilliant and there are a few breath taking visual instances that need to be seen on the big screen.

Story: In an alternate universe, a Turin Horse will become the name for a movie that turns out to have nothing to do with its title. Slow-cinema maestro Béla Tarr’s latest (last?) opens with a blank-screen voiceover relating the semi-apocryphal story of Nietzsche’s madness-inducing encounter with a mistreated carthorse, and declares that “of the horse, we know nothing”. Cut to a carthorse, trudging through a hellish swirl of mist. But this is not necessarily the same horse, we are clearly not in Italy, and the film soon lets the animal retreat to the background, in order to focus exclusively on the slow, hard, regular days of the old carter and his daughter. He has an apostle’s beard and a mop of grey curls, frequently backlight-haloed, and the use of only his left arm; she has a hard, handsome face, tight-mouthed and dead-eyed, beneath long wind-whipped hair; and they live a life of emptiness and hardship in a stone croft on a barren plain.

Long, slow takes are the order of the day, of course, although Tarr and DP Fred Kelemen rarely hold for long on an empty frame. The camera steadicam-glides around the couple’s activities over the course of six similar days, as they eat their unchanging meal of boiled potato and a pinch of salt, fetch water from the well, or simply gaze out of the window. The technical aspect of the film is truly marvelous, an almost pathological avoidance of the cut by movement and reframing that speaks wonders of the operators’ stamina and agility, and Kelemen’s complex, invisible lighting. With irresistible immediacy, one striking composition follows another, frequently in the same shot, in familiar dirty Tarr blacks and contrasty white. The camera calms down towards the end, as the pair’s already minimal energy diminishes, and winds up in the last section with two stunning images: the first, inexplicably moving, of the daughter staring ghost-like from the window as the camera zooms ever so slowly in; then finally, a fixed two-shot of the pair seated at the old oak table in Old Master lighting, abstracted from reality.

All the while, a ghastly wind storm rages outside. Its terrible howling tears across the soundtrack in parts, but is frequently replaced with a simple musical refrain, an AABC violin/cello theme played over and over against scraping strings and organ ostinato like some purgatorial devil’s dirge, repeated forever. Excitement comes halfway through in the form of a sudden neighbour, who tells them that the wind has blown the town away, that life is now “the most ghastly existence you can imagine” and that the great and noble are nowhere now to be found, having lain down before the acquisitive. The apocalyptic tone is hardly countered by the old man’s “that’s rubbish”. His gruff, needless antagonism returns when he chases of a band of “filthy bastard” gypsies who stop for water (we’re in Hungary, for sure); but they’re not so bad, paying for what they take with a book, from which the daughter reads haltingly: some religious tract that makes no sense to her and little to use. Needless to say there is no God in this world.

The horse swiftly (relative, in the context) gives up moving, and then eating. The well runs dry. They pack their belongings and leave, then inexplicably return, presumably for lack of point. The father stops eating. The lamps mysteriously go out – “what is this darkness?” the daughter asks. She stops eating. Although the horse is clearly not Nietzsche’s, the world of the film is the one he saw in a flash of depressive lucidity, as the legend would have it, a world of pointless, never-ending, self-perpetuating hardship and cruelty. Tarr’s vision of life is certainly nasty and brutish, though not necessarily short, and full of false endings before it finally sputters out like the lamp. We were fortunate enough to have Tarr himself to introduce the screening, and he described the film as ugly, boring, miserable and slow, which is perfectly right. He also says that this will be his farewell to film-making which, with such a hopeless frame of mind, may be just as well.

Movie: Perfect Sense

Release Date: February 10, 2012 (limited)

Studio: IFC Films

Director: David Mackenzie

Screenwriter: Kim Fupz Aakeson

Starring: Ewan McGregor, Eva Green, Connie Nielsen, Ewan Bremner, Stephen Dillane

Genre: Romance, Thriller

Official Website: Not Available

IMDB Rating: 7.1

Story: One thing to be said about Perfect Sense is that while it was not what I expected (in a good way), it is an original and beautifully crafted film.

Starring Ewan McGregor and Eva Green, the film follows scientist Susan (Green) working on finding a cure to a strange disease affecting the whole world. She meets Michael (McGregor), a talented chef working at a restaurant located below her apartment. The two of them seem to connect instantly on a level they haven’t been able to with other people before.

But with the entire world’s population affected by a strange disease that first depresses you then takes away your sense of smell, we are left wondering if this is only the beginning to the disease and at which point it will stop.

As the audience, we are told the story through Susan and Michael’s eyes. We see the evolution of the disease and how they experience this new world. It’s quite fascinating actually and will definitely make you think.

I was quite surprised by how the film was marketed versus what it actually is. From the trailer and official synopsis, you would be led to think it is a love story between Ewan McGregor and Eva Green’s characters. But that’s not really what it is at all, that’s only showing 50% of it. While the core of the story is about the love story, the film also is about this global pandemic and how people are affected by it.

Director David Mackenzie (Young Adam, Mister Foe) has crafted something beautiful here. He uses a very simple love story as the thread to guide us through something much more dramatic. Not only that, he translates parts of the disease using auditive and visual tools, which gives the viewer a sense of uneasiness and immersion into the world. It was quite hypnotizing, especially towards the end of the film.

Eva Green and Ewan McGregor both offer strong performances as their characters deal with the effects of the disease. It was a pleasure to watch them interact and go through a large spectrum of emotions.

Perfect Sense will make you think, but will also make you smile with its beautiful love story. There is a slow build but I wasn’t bored for one second. I absolutely recommend that you check it out, especially if the premise sounds like something you might enjoy. And if you’re not a fan of love stories, not to worry, it is definitely not your typical romance, but much more.

Movie: Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D

Release Date: February 10, 2012 (3D theaters)

Studio: 20th Century Fox

Director: George Lucas

Screenwriter: George Lucas

Starring: Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd, Ian McDiarmid, Pernilla August, Ahmed Best, Anthony Daniels, Ray Park, Kenny Baker, Frank Oz

Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

Official Website: StarWars.com

IMDB Rating: 6.4

Story: Set against the thrilling and exotic backdrop of a “galaxy far, far away,” Star Wars is perfectly suited to the immersive 3D theatrical experience, and ‘Episode I’ delivers some of the Saga’s most stunning and spectacular sequences – from the Naboo invasion to the Tatooine Podraces to the climactic lightsaber battle between Darth Maul and the Jedi.

Supervised by Industrial Light & Magic, the meticulous conversion is being done with utmost respect for the source material, and with a keen eye for both technological considerations and artistic intentions.

Last fall brought the news that George Lucas and 20th Century Fox had plans to re-release the entire Star Wars saga in 3D. Fast-forward to today and that threat promise has taken one more step forward to becoming true, as the 3D version of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace has an official release date.

The Phantom Menace is now slated to return to theaters on February 10th, 2012 – more than fifteen years after the special edition of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope was released in theaters, matter of fact.

All three chapters in Lucas’ Star Wars prequel trilogy feature a ton of digitally-created F/X, scenery, alien creatures, vehicles, etc…. and since computer-animated movies that are converted into 3D tend to look decent enough, the post-production conversion of The Phantom Menace should actually be okay as well.

The bigger issue is whether or not there are actually that many people who are willing to cough up the cash to see The Phantom Menace in 3D. It’s still by and large considered to be the weakest link in the Star Wars franchise (and considering fans’ feelings about the prequels in general, that’s saying something). Also, and this is more my opinion than anything else, the digital F/X in the film haven’t aged nearly as well as those in the original Star Wars trilogy – back when miniatures, matte paintings, and practical sets were all the rage.

On that note: sit down sometime and (if you dare) re-watch some of the footage from any one of the Star Wars prequels. Most of the time the camerawork is very sedentary, and there’s little in the way of creative movement or angles. Nearly every frame of those films are crammed full with computer-animated objects that distract from the fact that the camera is never really exploring these worlds, but instead just sitting back and admiring it all from a distance.

The Phantom Menace may end up looking really impressive in 3D up on the big screen when it arrives next year on February 10th. But do you really want to sit through this mess of a movie in a theater again?
